"A truly iconic, signature development" was the architect’s brief, however the design also had to convey "a true sense of place". In doing that, Rob Mirams and his team from Sydney based Fender Katsalidis Mirams have created a distinctive selection of modern tropical homes. Each has been designed to give sea views to all the bedrooms and living areas, receive cooling ocean breezes and catch the sunshine.
The architecture adopts traditional methods of openness, shade and natural ventilation, manifested in modern materials to suit contemporary life and servicing requirements. Built form is designed to complement the landscape rather than dominate it. Materials and finishes are discreet and natural in their feel and appearance. Concrete provides large spans to open up the living areas, and sliding glass panels allow the interior and exterior spaces to combine.
Great care has been taken to minimise the environmental impact with shading, open ventilation, double-glazing with high-performance glass and a high level of insulation. Other environmentally-friendly features include access by an inclinator rather than car, water-cooled air-conditioning to reduce the power load, rainwater recycling from roofs, waste recycling and landscaping using local species which require minimal water.
Materials have been selected to provide a comfortable environment, for example darker-coloured stone and shady planting to reduce glare from the sun.
