Kamala Beach Introduction:

Although Kamala Beach was one of the more severely affected areas during the 2004 Tsunami, Kamala Beach has been restored to be one of the prettiest beaches on Phuket Island again. Along the beach front, numerous mobile stalls offer Thai food and drinks at very reasonable prices. As for accommodation offering direct beach access, there are plenty of beach huts and mid-range resorts to choose from. However, unlike Surin Beach, Kamala Beach lacks luxury hotels except the comfortable Kamala Beach Estate located on the southern end of Kamala Beach.

Kamala Beach is located between Laem Singh Beach and Surin Beach on the western coast of Phuket Island. The northern end of Kamala Beach is much quieter than the southern end, and is a more private spot to enjoy a day of sun. Accessing this end of Kamala Beach used to be quite hairy because the dirt track leading to the beach was overgrown with long wild grass that can cause nasty scratches on your legs if you're wearing shorts. The road is motorcyclist-friendly today, with the grasses trimmed to allow visitors to ride through on their motorcycles without any problems. The northern end of Kamala Beach maybe a more secluded hangout for those looking for privacy, but it lacks basic facilities like showers and toilets. The nearest flushing toilet is located a 15-minute walk away at the central section of Kamala Beach.

The central section of Kamala Beach along the beachfront is home to some resorts, but running parallel to the beach road is Kamala Village, where a small stretch of shops, restaurants, guesthouses, and bars cater to the needs of tourists and residents. Ubiquitous tailor shops line the road making you wonder how many tailor shops can an area the size of three football fields (the size of Kamala Village) support. The village is popular with Scandinavian visitors and features plenty of restaurants serving Scandinavian food.

The southern end of Kamala is home to Rockfish where you can get one of the best breakfast deals on the island and the Kamala Beach Estate - the road from these establishments lead to some of the best real estate on the island, which can offer a pleasant way to while away an afternoon. The Best Breakfasts Kamala Has To Offer

Rockfish located at the southern end of Kamala is a picturesque restaurant overlooking Kamala Bay. Built on stilts and perched under the shade of a large Begonia tree, Rockfish offers a beautiful view amid a relaxing atmosphere. Its interiors are decorated with art by local artists, and also display pieces by Budis and Constantin. The Rockfish dinner menu boasts some pretty harmonious original concoctions like tuna steak in a tangy Asian-inspired sauce infused with tamarind and sesame oil, as well as Thai favourites like Duck Curry.

Although Rockfish at night is a pleasant place to dine, prices are high and the food has not been consistent. It is in its breakfast menu that Rockfish offers the best value. In the mornings, Rockfish looks even prettier, and serves breakfast sets complete with orange juice, coffee, or tea at only 99 THB. If you are ravenous, there are even 199 THB sets which offer even better value.

Recommended dishes include: eggs Benedict with spinach, muesli with yoghurt honey and fruit, 2 eggs any style with choice of bacon or sausage and toast. The pancakes with mango and raspberry coulis, on the other hand, were very disappointing. The pancakes had the consistency of a rubber band, and the coulis was in fact jam. However, a 99 THB disappointment is one everyone is able to afford, and doesn't do enough harm to affect the overall breakfast experience. Rockfish is definitely a great place to kick off a day on the island.

Kamala Bakery can almost do no wrong with its offers. For 120 THB, a large sausage, lashings of bacon, 2 eggs of any style, freshly baked hot roll, and a juicy tomato, complete with orange juice, and your choice of coffee or tea. Alternatively, you can have baked beans instead of roll, or both.

Located along the road leading from Surin to Patong, near the Siam Commercial bank, Kamala Bakery is a cozy establishment which seats about 20 comfortably. It doesn't have a stunning beach view, but it is very comfortable and offers an experience alike to breakfasting at someone's home.

Kamala Bakery also sells sausages, bacon and hams. Pies are available too, along with a small selection of cheeses and pastas. The bakery also serves some pastries, but its cakes are not nearly as good its breakfasts.
