The paradise of Mai Khao is adjacent to the five-star JW Marriott Resort and Spa that boasts many award-winning eateries. Adding to an already magni.cent facility overlooking the Andaman Sea, the JW Marriott has begun expansion and development of an additional 84 two-bedroom luxury villas, a sparkling third swimming pool, an elite Thai cooking school and restaurant, and a new pub featuring superb live entertainment. Mai Khao, conveniently near the Phuket International Airport, is only a short distance from the Yacht Haven Marina and the world renowned international golf course - Blue Canyon Country Club. Mai Khao beach has for centuries been one of the world’s largest nesting areas for the great leatherback turtle. The female does not reach sexual maturity until 25-30 years of age and always returns to the beach where she was born to lay her eggs. Nesting season only occurs in every two years. Turtles can live for 100 years and sightings are becoming rarer and rarer in this region. Mai Khao villagers are doing their utmost to help conserve the dwindling numbers. Since 1990, the locals have run the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation. With recent help from the JW Marriott Group, they are better able to help save these grand creatures from extinction. Conservation efforts include beach patrols during nesting season to ensure the safety of the female turtles and the incubating eggs. The foundation members also collect endangered eggs, hatching them in a safe environment to release hatchlings to the sea each April in an attempt to increase the species’ numbers. Due to the importance of the sea turtle conservation program, Mai Khao will remain 90% undeveloped. Large tracts of oceanfront land are made a national park with the .rst 40 meters of beachfront owned by the forestry department. Mai Khao is the perfect place for family vacations or a rejuvenating getaway for paradise seekers across the globe. Many Europeans now consider the region to be ideal for a second home - so close to the international airport yet another world away. The serenity and awe-inspiring beauty of Mai Khao truly makes it Heaven on Earth.
